A common belief is that saliva in the mouth has natural disinfectants, which leads people to think that it is beneficial to “lick their wounds”.Research has not shown that human licking of wounds disinfects them, but it could help clean the wound by removing larger contaminants such as dirt, and directly brushing away infective bodies.
So, licking would be a way of washing; useful if pure water isn’t available.
