American surgeon Dr Joseph Murray performed the first successful transplant in 1954 – a kidney transplant between twins, which was successful because no immunosuppression is necessary in genetically identical twins.

In the late 1940s, British scientist Peter Medawar improved the understanding of rejection, becoming the first to suggest use of immunosuppressive drugs.
