The laboratory white rat is actually an albino, derived from selective breeding of the common brown rat.

In 1895, Clark University in the US established a population of domestic albino brown rats to study the effects of diet, and for other physiological studies.

Since then, these rats have been used in experiments because they grow quickly to sexual maturity and are easy to keep and to breed in captivity.
